SPICE Teacher Programs
Professional Development for Teachers (Middle School & High School)
We offer two free summer institutes at Stanford University for secondary school teachers (one for middle school teachers and one for high school teachers) and a yearlong fellowship for secondary school teachers in Hawaii. All three programs focus on the teaching of East Asia. Participants learn from top scholars, engage in pedagogy-focused discussions with SPICE curriculum experts, receive free lesson plans, and qualify for three units of credit from Stanford Continuing Studies.

East Asia Summer Institute for Middle School Teachers
This three-day professional development opportunity at Stanford is for middle school teachers who want to learn content and consider strategies for teaching East Asia in the middle school curriculum. A special focus is given to teaching about ancient Chinese dynasties, feudal Japan, and the Silk Road.

East Asia Summer Institute for High School Teachers
This three-day professional development opportunity for high school teachers highlights the politics, economics, history, and literature of modern China, Korea, and Japan. The institute takes place at Stanford and gives special focus to U.S.–Asia relations, the Asian diaspora in the United States, and the diversity of the Asian American experience.

East Asia Seminars for Teachers in Hawaii
This yearlong fellowship connects Hawaii teachers with Stanford scholars, local professors, and SPICE curriculum experts to strengthen teachers’ knowledge, pedagogy, and confidence to teach about modern East Asia and U.S.–Asia relations.
Professional Development for Community College Instructors
SPICE also offers interactive professional development opportunities for community college faculty and academic staff in partnership with Stanford Global Studies.

Community College Programs
SPICE has worked closely with community college instructors since 2011, supporting their efforts to internationalize the community college curriculum by connecting them to top Stanford scholars and providing them with the best resources and pedagogy available.
