On September 7th and 8th, 2009, SPICE director Gary Mukai visited three public high schools in Okinawa as well as the Okinawa AmerAsian School. Most of the students at the Okinawa AmerAsian School have American fathers and Okinawan/Japanese mothers. While visiting the four schools, Gary had the chance to talk with many classes of students about what they would like American high school students to know about Okinawa. SPICE plans to develop a short documentary on AmerAsians during the next year and a comprehensive curricular unit on U.S.-Okinawan relations in the near future.

On September 3 and 4, 2009, SPICE director Gary Mukai and SPICE curriculum consultant Rennie Moon participated in an international academic conference called "Reflections and Prospects of the Understanding Korea Projects," in Seoul. The conference was sponsored by the Academy of Korean Studies.  A primary focus of discussion was on how Korea is being taught in various countries around the world. Gary and Rennie shared an overview of the SPICE curricular unit, U.S.-South Korean Relations, which was written by SPICE curriculum specialists Joon Seok Hong and Rylan Sekiguchi. Stanford Professor Gi-Wook Shin served as the primary academic advisor.

This teacher's guide was developed specifically for teachers in the New York City Public Schools to encourage the use of "Indigo: A Color That Links the World," Calliope: Exploring World History (September 2010, Volume 21, Number 1) and the study of the Silk Road in their classrooms. The indigo issue of Calliope and the teacher’s guide were developed in collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Project as part of its Silk Road Connect education initiative.

In collaboration with the Tribute World Trade Center Visitor Center (Tribute Center) in New York City, SPICE has developed educational materials that help students to reflect upon the impact of September 11th and the humanitarian efforts that took place in the aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Center.

This graphic novel tells the story of the first Japanese diplomatic mission to leave Japan after over two centuries of isolation under the Tokugawa Shogunate. Chronicling encounters with foreign leaders, cross-cultural mishaps, and unlikely friendships that develop despite barriers of language and politics, the graphic novel follows the embasssy's voyage to San Francisco, Washington D.C., and other cities on the East coast.

This article explains how the key stakeholders interact in labor-management-state relations in Vietnam within the context of the global economic crisis. After national reunification at the end of the Vietnam War (1954-1975), Vietnam developed a centralized command economy (1975-1986); the socialist government controlled all aspects of the Vietnamese economy including the prohibition of market interactions (although these interactions always existed underground). However, economic shambles and grassroots protests – inspired by Gorbachev's glasnost (openness, in which Vietnamese people were allowed to talk openly and honestly between 1986-89 about the problems they knew) and perestroika (political reform, the willingness of some top Vietnamese leaders to apply Gorbachev's reforms in Vietnam but that did not materialize) – led to the Sixth Party Congress (1986-1991).

In light of its far-reaching political and institutional transformation, Indonesia has received comparatively little attention in scholarship and media. Trailing in the shadow of two Asian giants, China and India, Indonesia's steady democratic consolidation and economic recovery has gone largely unnoticed by the general public. This article will summarize some of the key developments over the last ten years and provide an outlook on future challenges.

Historical memory plays a profound role in shaping national identities and international relations. Leaders often invoke visions of a shared past to unify diverse populations under a common flag or to rally diverse countries toward a common regional purpose. However, historical memories can also be explosively divisive. This article briefly examines one such case: the case of Preah Vihear, an ethereal ancient temple complex that sits high in the Dangrek Mountains near the Thai-Cambodian border.

This article is useful for teaching about historical memory and territorial disputes. The SPICE unit, Divided Memories: Comparing History Textbooks, provides students with a broad overview of historical memory and certain sensitive historical episodes of the 20th century. Also, the lessons, "The Territorial Integrity of Indonesia," in Understanding Indonesia in the 21st Century, and "The Russo-Japanese 'Northern Territories' Dispute," in Choices in International Conflict: With a Focus on Security Issues in Asia, provide students with background on territorial disputes.

"Pearl Harbor Memory: Survivor Reflections" was a panel presentation that took place during a "Pearl Harbor: History, Memory, Memorial" summer institute that was sponsored by the AsiaPacificEd Program, East-West Center, Honolulu. The summer institute was part of the Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshop for Schoolteachers supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) under the We the People Initiative. Additional support for the program was provided by the Arizona Memorial Museum Association, the National Park Service and the Japan American Society of Hawaii.
