New Scholars Corner video: Identity Politics
Scholars Corner is an ongoing SPICE initiative to share FSI’s cutting-edge social science research with high school and college classrooms nationwide and international schools abroad.
This week we released “The Rise and Implications of Identity Politics,” the latest installment in our ongoing Scholars Corner series. Each Scholars Corner episode features a short video discussion with a scholar at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford University sharing his or her latest research.
This Scholars Corner video features New York Times bestselling author Francis Fukuyama discussing the recent rise of identity politics, both in the United States and around the world. “In the 20th century we had a politics that was organized around an economic axis, primarily. You had a left that worried about inequality…and you had a right that was in favor of the greatest amount of freedom,” summarizes Fukuyama. “[N]ow we are seeing a shift in many countries away from this focus on economic issues to a polarization based on identity.”
According to Fukuyama, this shift in politics is reflected in such domestic social movements as Black Lives Matter and #MeToo, as well as in international movements like the Catalan independence movement, white nationalism, and even the Islamic State.
The rise of identity politics may have troubling implications for modern democracies. “In the United States, for example, the Republican party increasingly has become a party of white people, and the Democratic party has become increasingly a party of minorities and women. In general, I think the problem for a democracy is that you’ve got these specific identities…[but] you need something more than that. You need an integrative sense of national identity [that’s] open to the existing diversity of the society that allows people to believe that they’re part of the same political community,” says Fukuyama.
“That, I think, is the challenge for modern democracy at the present moment.”

Mariko Yang-Yoshihara is an Instructor and an Educational Researcher at SPICE interested in driving social impact through curriculum development and research. Currently, she is focused on understanding how constructivist theory-based design thinking principles can 1) foster a more entrepreneurial mindset for adult learners and 2) promote an interdisciplinary STEAM (STEM + Arts/Humanities) approach to innovation for young and adult learners by developing educational curricula and analyzing their impacts. Her research informs the courses she develops and teaches for students ranging from middle to graduate-level across Japan.
Mariko’s academic research has been presented at national and international conferences, including the annual meetings of the American Educational Research Association, the Society of Research into Higher Education, and Japan Society for Research Policy and Innovation Management. Her past research findings have been published in peer-reviewed journals including International Journal of STEM Education, Thinking Skills and Creativity, Classroom Discourse, and Administrative Sciences, as well as in volumes published by the MIT Press, the Tokyo University Press (Japanese), and Hakuto Shobo (Japanese). Additionally, Mariko co-authored a book on STEAM education and design thinking (世界を変えるSTEAM人材―シリコンバレー「デザイン思考」の核心) published by Asahi Shinbun Press in 2019, which has been reprinted and translated into Chinese (title: 硅谷是如何培养创新人才的) by the Zhejiang People’s Publishing House (浙江人民出版社). She also conducts research on administrative career paths within higher education, focusing on the professional identities of those with doctorate degrees working within research management and administration at a global scale. She recently co-edited The Emerald Handbook of Research Administration Around the World that gathered contributions from over 50 countries and regions across Africa, North America, South America, Asia, Australasia, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and the Middle East (Emerald Publishing, 2023).
In 2016, Mariko co-founded SKY Labo, an educational non-profit based in Japan, with a goal to nurture the next generation of STEAM thinkers. SKY Labo’s inquiry-based program utilizing human-centred pedagogical approaches has garnered official support from the Gender Equality Bureau of Japan’s Cabinet Office in 2019, and was honored with the Semi-Grand Prix of Nissan Foundation’s Rikajyo Ikusei Sho (Award Promoting Next Generation of Women in STEM) in 2022.
Mariko received a Ph.D. and a M.A. in Political Science from Stanford University. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Irvine and a B.A. in Literature from the University of the Sacred Heart in Japan. In addition to her role at SPICE, Mariko is a Visiting Professor at Tohoku University, serving as a faculty member of the School of Engineering and an academic advisor to graduate students in the Department of Management Science and Technology.

Dr. HyoJung Jang is an instructor for the Sejong Korea Scholars Program at the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE). She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Theory and Policy as well as in Comparative and International Education from Penn State University, and an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Stanford University. Previously, HyoJung was a curriculum writer at SPICE, where she co-authored curriculum units on Korea and China, including Inter-Korean Relations: Rivalry, Reconciliation, and Reunification, China in Transition: Economic Development, Migration, and Education, and Colonial Korea in Historical Perspective.
Prior to her current appointment at SPICE, HyoJung worked at the World Bank in the education sector for two years, supporting the efforts of the Ministry of Education of Laos in expanding the access to quality education for all children, particularly the most disadvantaged children in the poorest and remotest rural areas. Toward that end, she has conducted research and policy analysis on the basic education sub-sector in Laos, with a focus on gender, inclusive education, teacher professional development, and education financing, and collaborated with the Ministry and international stakeholders for policy reforms, strategy formulation, project design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation efforts.
HyoJung’s academic research has been presented at national and international conferences, including the annual meetings of the Comparative and International Education Society in Washington D.C., Vancouver, Canada, Atlanta, Georgia, and Mexico City, Mexico, and the American Educational Research Association in Washington D.C. and New York, NY.
HyoJung’s research agenda broadly centers on the relationship between broader institutional characteristics (e.g., school-, educational system-, and national-levels) and gaps in student achievement outcomes across gender and class. For instance, one of her earlier studies examining the relationship between the national-level gender egalitarian measure and the gender gap in mathematics achievement cross-nationally was presented at the highlighted session of the Large Scale Cross National Special Interest Group at the 2015 Comparative and International Education Society. Another key area of HyoJung’s research focuses on non-cognitive skills and achievement, and how broader institutional contexts shape that relationship. Her dissertation examined the relationship between a non-cognitive skill and academic achievement, showing how that relationship varies across more than 60 countries and what would explain the cross-national variation.
HyoJung has led and presented at teacher seminars at Duke and Stanford Universities, as well as at the National Council for the Social Studies. She has also presented at the East Asia Regional Council of Schools in Thailand.
